Asset Support Engineering Manager
As Russell Mineral Equipment’s Asset Support Engineering Manager, it is Simon Thompson’s role to champion the delivery of world-class engineering support for the upgrading and sustainment of RME Mill Relining Machines and technologies in service around the world.
Simon’s skilled asset support engineering team are a key driving force behind RME's commitment to delivering innovative solutions, not only in the form of the new products that emerge from the factory floor, but the continuous improvement of RME’s mill reline machines that operate in the field. In this role, Simon leads the engineering processes required to sustain in-service equipment through-life. This includes the modification of systems and components to meet evolving client requirements, the application of machine updates and upgrades, safety and functional improvements, the integration of new technologies to existing equipment, and obsolescence and replacement programs – in support of RME’s mission to continually optimise mineral processing operations for its clients, making the process of mill liner replacement ever faster, and inherently safer.
Prior to RME, Simon gained practical mechanical engineering and manufacturing experience with a number of Toowoomba-based OEMs in the design of neo natal transport, heavy tyre and wheel solutions, and with a renowned oil and gas equipment supplier. Simon is highly-credentialed with a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering with First Class Honours from the University of Southern Queensland (USQ), also receiving the Frederick Barnes Waldron Award in recognition for attaining the highest overall achievement in this course. Simon is now an active industry representative on USQ’s Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering Advisory Committee. Simon is also a Member of the Institution of Engineers Australia (MIEAust), a Registered Professional Engineer of Professionals Australia (RPEng), and a Registered Professional Engineer of Queensland (RPEQ). Of particular note, Simon is named inventor and co-inventor on a number of mechanical device patents.
